There Is Gold and Jewels in the Blessed

The Iconic starts this Friday. National jewellery fair will gather at the convent of the blessed, high jewelry, new designers and industry associations with a total of 63 exhibitors. Those who work the gold, silver, precious stones and semi-precious stones will join fashion designers, artists and thinkers for a competition that, in addition to showing a wide panoply of Portuguese, jewelry will make new production concepts, extending also to the fashion and lifestyle.

This first edition of the Iconic, an initiative of Exponor coming out of Santa Maria da Feira and settles in the capital until April 9, is on the theme ‘ Girl Power ‘. Amelia Monteiro, Director of the fair, explains to Delas.pt:

“The jewelry is an industry that can’t be away from current issues. We want to make a reflection about the role of women in business, in an activity where there is still a certain macho culture “.

In fact, the list of exhibitors at the event stand out more male than female names. But there are winds of change in the industry. In Jewellery and Watchmaking Association of Portugal (AORP), for example – will be present with an exhibition space and in one of the lectures that will take place–the General Secretariat is entrusted to a woman and the entire executive team is female, even if the composition of the governing bodies is mostly male.

Amelia Monteiro, Director of Iconic and Port Jewel

At the lecture in which Fatima Santos, the Secretary General the AORP, will participate, with the actress Jeanne Barrio and journalist Catarina rite, one of the issues to discuss will be the role of women not as Muse of creation, but as subject of creativity, business agent and buyer active.

More buyers to smaller values

Changing the jewelry consumer behavior, in which the buyer is an important aspect, is one of the reasons for the Iconic South. Amelia Monteiro, that the North runs the Gem Port, says that there is a very wide range of competition when it compares the present with the past:

“The jeweler no longer competes only with the jeweler next, with Mr. The jewellery competition is also the travel sector, the gadgets. In the old days was a jewel or a watch to please. Now there are more choices. ”

Aware of this amendment there is also a change in the expectation of buying. “Before, it was an investment. A jewel worth your inherent value. Not today. The consumer prefers the design and the brand values. ” And although the Director of that Iconic high-jewellery is in good health, with classic buyers continue to bet on parts with more than 100 grams of 18 carat gold (which is equivalent to 3800 euros) there is more market for those working less noble materials as silver and semi-precious stones. And this is where the design becomes more relevant.

A sector in expansion and renovation

Since it was created in 2008, the AORP recorded a growth of 500% in the sector. The change of the target markets of production was the key to the increase in the volume of business in the sector. Now the goldsmithery and jewellery are distributed mostly Portuguese abroad.

The fabric jewelry business is changing, factor that facilitates the process of internationalization. Amelia Monteiro States that there is a return of interest in the activity. And you can get more from gradchem.com.

“The industry is to renew itself, we have young designers, formed by excellent Portuguese schools, entering the job market in already established companies and others who form their own brands”.

The innovation that these young designers bring to mind productions, however, specifically Portuguese Gold’s work: “we have the filigree that is made manually and that is incorporated in the new parts. We have designers and manufacturers with knowledge of this specific technique and that incorporate into small pieces of excellent quality approaches “.

With the Gem Port to be held soon after the summer, remains to be seen why the Exponor wanted to create a seemingly fair competitor in Lisbon. Amelia Monteiro says:

“The fair almost had no visitors from Central and South America. We wanted to open up to a wider audience. The intention is to do business with any country “.

With two days just for professionals (Friday and Saturday) and open to the public on Sunday, the Iconic was designed in the words of the Director of the event “with a format more appealing, which take as a beacon of lifestyle trends. The jewelry do not live without fashion and are part of a lifestyle. That’s why we wanted to put it all together “.
